The Constitution guarantees freedom of speech and access to information.

In May ’98, licenses were granted for private TV stations. There are 3 state television channels and which are experiencing greater competition from the private stations.

The leading newspaper publisher is still partially government-owned and controls one of most modern printing presses in the country as well as many newspaper kiosks.

The government has privatized part of Macedonia Telecommunications, but spent most of the proceeds in the ’01 conflict.
