Land & History

Ohrid /OKH-rid/ is a beautiful, historic city between mountains and the large, crystal clear lake of the same name. Archaeologists have dated settlements here to the early Stone Age, but the first city here in recorded history was Lychindos, whose founding is part of an early Phonecian legend. A reconstructed 200 BC theater lies outside the walls of the 10th century AD fortress of King Samuil (Samuel) , which is under reconstruction.

In this city, Saints Kliment and Naum established the first Balkan, and Slavic, university and continued the work of Saints Cyril and Methodi, using Cyrillic script to translate the Scriptures into the Slavonic language. Inside the 1,000 year old Sv. Kliment Monastery is a beautiful collection of ancient icons that survived over 500 years of Turkish rule during which the church was actually converted into a mosque. Other famous churches include 12th century Sv. Jovan (St. John) Kaneo, 12th century Sv. Naum, and the 11th century Cathedral of Sv. Sophia. There are also many museums.
Notes: Sv. is short for "Sveti," meaning "Saint" or "Holy."
more history: travel, 886 A.D., 1767, 1967

Modern Ohrid is built around the hill crowned with King Samuel's fortress.

The small church, Sv. Jovan Kaneo, represents orthodoxy in the minds of most Macedonians.

St. Kliment Ohridski founded the first university in the Balkans and probably finished creating the Cyrillic alphabet.
