Kumanovo + Prilep + Tetovo + Veles
Land & History
Kumanovo /Koo-MA-no-vo/ lies on an old north-south route and a new east-west corridor, making it an important crossroad. Kumanovo was at the heart of the Karpoš /KAR-posh/ Uprising against the Turks in 1689 and often surrounded by fighting during the 2001 revolt.
People
103,205 people live in Kumanovo. The region has a mixed population; ethnic Macedonians live mainly in the city, while the ethnic Albanians live mainly in the surrounding villages. There are also more Serbs in this region than anywhere else outside of Skopje.
The body of believers here is small with few denominations, however divisions separate the people-and the churches. |

Land & History
Prilep /PREE-lep/ is located near the center of the country. It is famous for the ruins of King Marko's Citadel which are situated above the town on an ancient mountain of worn rock. This was the capital for the Macedonian prince in the 14th century. (more history: 1014 A.D. 1564, Dec 2001)
People
Currently, 73,351 people live here. The neighborhood of Trizla is the 3rd largest community of Gypsy people in Macedonia.
It is the largest and best-known center of tobacco products in Macedonia. Tobacco was once called green gold, but the tobacco companies are claiming budget shortfalls and refusing to pay for most of the tobbacco they receive. It is also known for its pivarnica (brewery) where one of the most popular beers is bottled as well as the Pepsi products for Macedonia. |

Land & History
Tetovo /TE-toe-voe/ was at the center of much of the 2001 crisis. This is due to its dense population of ethnic Albanians--half of the city--before the conflict. The Monastery of Lesok dating from the14th century was situated near Tetovo, but it was deliberately destroyed by a terrorist bomb after the peace deal was signed in 2001, and has been rebuilt. The Šar Planina /Shar PLAA-ni-na, or Šar mountain range, is the highest region of Macedonia. It is also the place of origin for the national dog, the Šarplaninec /Shar-PLAA-ni-nets/, which is a very large, good natured sheep dog. The well-known ski resort Popova Šapka is here, but has been deserted due to the security problems. (more history: 1995, 1996,
2001)
People
70,841 people currently live here. Due to the refugees from the Kosovo crisis who moved their residence to Macedonia it was the largest city outside of Skopje before the 01 crisis. Many refugees from the crisis have returned, but decided not to return and moved elsewhere. The past and present situations make living in Tetovo unattractive to people of all ethnicities. Fear is common among those living here. The police are still trying to enter villages in the region, and random gunfire is an almost nightly occurrence, and gunbattles happen almost weekly.
Tetovo is the home of the Teteks textile company and several agricultural companies.

Land & History
Veles /VE-les/ was an important trade center in the 19th century, connecting Central Europe to the Aegean Sea. During the days of the Yugoslav Republic, Veles was called Titov Veles. It also has been a significant industrial town for many years. These industries are also why Veles has the highest cancer rates in Macedonia.
Stobi, which lies close to Veles, is the most famous archeological site in Macedonia. It dates back to 197 B.C. and was the capital of the Roman province Macedonia Salutaris.
People
57,602 people live in Veles.
The church body here is small, but has good foundations for unity, because the people of this small city know and love each other.
