Mala Prespa is the Macedonian name for the southern part of Lake Prespa and the actual Small Lake Prespa in Albania and Greece where mostly ethnic Macedonians live.
In 1913, the second Balkan war ended, and the London Conference divided Macedonia among the surrounding countries. Lake Prespa was divided among Serbia, Albania and Greece. In 1948, most of the ethnic Macedonian in the Greek part were exiled, killed, or assimilated. This page is dedicated to the Albanian region. ( Historical Maps of Macedonia)
There are ten villages in the Albanian part of this region with a total population of about 6,000. There are two Orthodox priests under the Albanian Orthodox Patriarch, but using the Macedonian language and clerical calendar. There is also a small, rarely used police force. Societal pressures are often stronger than potential penalties at preventing crime, due to the smallness of the community, and how well everyone knows everyone else. |
