Land & History:

Strumica /STROO-mee-tsa/ is the largest supplier of fruit and vegetable produce in the country. Close to Strumica, Tsar Samuil's forces lost a major battle against the Byzantine army (1014 A.D.). The ruins of the castle where this battle was fought are located on the mountains above the town.

People:

45,087 people live in Strumica. The Strumica region is known for its Strumički /STROOM-eech-ki/ dialect, which is more Bulgarian in nature than most Macedonian dialects and is least like standard Macedonian.

The Methodist Church in Macedonia has deep roots here. The late President Trajkovski was a Methodist and was from this region. There are also many other smaller churches.
